Full membership

Prerequisites
You must be able to demonstrate at least 150 days of work in line with AIIC rules, covering all the requested language pairs.
You should be sponsored by a number of members who have worked with you in a conference setting - vouching for your expertise and professional quality (peer evaluation system).

Obligations
You will undertake a commitment to abide by AIIC's Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Standards.

Privileges
AIIC membership opens up a world of opportunities - a seal of professionalism that will set you apart from the crowd and will secure worldwide recognition.
Your profile will be included in the interactive electronic directory, a dynamic tool consulted by AIIC interpreters seeking to recommend colleagues, as well as agencies and directly by clients, including major International Institutions.
Access to AIIC resources, job opportunities, and the members-only pages of AIIC's website.
Priority access to training courses and professional development opportunities with members-only preferential rates.
A voice in shaping the future of the profession.
The right to vote in Regional and General Assemblies.

PRE-candidate STATUS

Interpreters who do not comply with all of the prerequisites for full membership can apply to become pre-candidates.  For interpreters starting their careers, this is a first step towards joining AIIC.

Prerequisites

Three active members of AIIC must "present" you and confirm that you really do work as a conference interpreter.  Presenters ensure that, to the best of their knowledge, the interpreter they are presenting is familiar with and abides by all of AIIC's rules and regulations.

Obligations
You will undertake a commitment to abide by AIIC's Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Standards, just like full members do.
As a general rule, pre-candidates may retain their status for up to five years but can apply for full membership as soon as they have worked the requisite number of days based on their language combination and acquired the necessary sponsorships from active members.

Privileges
You can already start to make contact with seasoned AIIC colleagues and are welcome to attend live or on-line AIIC events and Regional Assemblies (but without voting rights).
Your profile is published on the AIIC electronic directory (on the members-only section).
You receive support, advice, and mentoring from the VEGA Network, a worldwide network of volunteers, AIIC members dedicated to helping budding and junior interpreters.

─── How to apply

HOW TO APPLY

The gateway to membership is through the Committee on Admissions and Language Classification, known as CACL and its website contains all the details for candidates and pre-candidates.
The Guide for Applicants is compulsory reading for those about to embark on this journey. It contains the key information you need to know about the classification of languages, sponsors, and waivers as well as a link to the AIIC Regulation Governing Admissions and Language Classification.

 The process in brief:
──       Applications are filed online, and at the end, you are requested to pay the processing fee.

──       Applications arriving at least 6 weeks before the deadline are prescreened to check their completeness but without any decision being taken. If necessary additional information may be requested.

──       All files are examined by the Committee on Admissions and Language Classification at one of its biannual meetings.

──       After each CACL meeting, the Secretariat publishes a list of all approved applicants, now classified as "candidates", initiating a two-month challenge period. Members who have valid reasons can challenge CACL's decisions.

──       Should there be a challenge during the 60-day period, an inquiry will be conducted by CACL, as stipulated in Annex 2 of its Rules of Procedure.

──       In the absence of an inquiry and once the 60-day period has expired, the candidate becomes a member.

That’s all there is to it!

Applications are submitted electronically and through the central AIIC website. Are you ready? Apply now!
